Sometimes a project comes along where there is really only one answer: Yes!
When we were contacted about a waterproofing project at the Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre, we knew we wanted to help. We wanted to use our waterproofing experience to provide the seals with a properly waterproofed pool, so we decided to take on the project at no cost to the centre.
There was also a bit of confusion when the enquiry first came through. With waterproofing and sealing being very much part of our day-to-day work, we initially assumed the “seal” in question was a sealing issue. Then came the realisation that these were not seals in the waterproofing sense. They were actual seals!
Cue a good laugh with the team, followed by a very quick decision that this was one project we simply could not say no to.

Waterproofing the Seal Pool
The six-day project was completed towards the end of September. The existing waterproofing system had experienced wear and tear from ongoing exposure to salt water and the demanding conditions of the environment.
Before we could apply the new waterproofing system, we needed to prepare the existing surface properly. This included removing areas of delaminated material, carrying out patching, sealing penetrations and applying a base coat.
We then applied a dual-coat waterproofing system, followed by a non-toxic top coat.
The result was a properly waterproofed pool ready to continue serving the seals in the care of the centre.
And apparently, the residents approved.
The Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre shared the completed project on its social media channels with the caption:
“This glow-up gets our seal of approval!”
We will happily take that as a five-star review.

About the Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre
The Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre is a non-profit organisation based at Hout Bay Harbour that rescues, rehabilitates and cares for Cape fur seals in need. The centre provides treatment and rehabilitation for injured, sick and vulnerable seals, with the aim of returning healthy animals to the wild whenever possible.
We were very happy to contribute our skills to the work they do and to help maintain an important part of the facility.

A Special Project for Our New Cape Town Office
This project also comes at an exciting time for us as we establish our presence in Cape Town with the opening of our second office, following our Johannesburg operation.
We see a lot of opportunities in Cape Town and the Western Cape, from residential and commercial water features to swimming pools, ponds, fountains, dams, waterproofing, filtration, repairs and ongoing maintenance.
Starting our Cape Town chapter with a project that allowed us to contribute our skills to a local organisation felt like a pretty good way to put down some roots in the city.
We are looking forward to what comes next and to working with more clients, businesses and organisations across the Western Cape, while continuing to undertake projects throughout South Africa and elsewhere in Africa.
For this particular project, however, we are happy to leave the final word to the clients.
A seal of approval.
